Interstate 95 Near Jacksonville, Florida is Deadly for Drivers

July 10, 2020

JACKSONVILLE, FL- With an average of 55 deadly crashes for every 100 miles of roadway, Interstate 95 is one of the nation's deadliest roads, according to ACTIONNEWSJAX.COM.

The state is aware of the risks this roadway presents to drivers and reportedly has plans to make some changes. Unfortunately, those changes are not occurring until 2023. At that point, the state will add four traffic lanes to Interstate 95 in an effort to reduce traffic congestion.

In 2018, 2,972 deadly collisions were reported in the Sunshine State. Those collisions killed a total of 3,217 people. The numbers indicated a rise in traffic deaths as compared to 2018.

While Florida's crash-related death toll increased in 2019, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that deaths dropped nationally in 2019. Early estimates indicate that 36,120 people were killed in traffic incidents in 2019. If accurate, the number of overall deaths dropped by 1.2 percent. The national drop in fatal crashes occurred even while miles traveled increased, leading to the second-lowest deadly crash per miles rate since the NHTSA began keeping track of such information.

Driver deaths dropped, as did fatalities among passengers in vehicles, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists. Trucker fatalities saw a slight one percent increase.

Crash fatalities were down in nine out of ten regions of the country. Florida is, unfortunately, one of the states to experience a rise in deadly crashes. The other states include South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. The southeast's traffic deaths went up by about two percent last year.
