Fatal Bike Crash Takes Place on Abercorn Street in Savannah, Georgia

March 24, 2020

SAVANNAH, GA- writes that police are carrying out an investigation into a fatal cyclist accident that occurred at the intersection of Largo Drive and Abercorn Street.*

The incident happened in the late evening when a 59-year-old from Savannah was biking eastbound on Largo Drive and attempting to cross Abercorn Street. Reports indicate that the light was red at the time. A 69-year-old man who was driving northbound in a Toyota Corolla entered an intersection and collided with the cyclist. Responders rushed the victim to the hospital, where he died this week from his injuries.

Car crash fatalities are becoming less common in Georgia. Statistics indicate that these deaths have declined for the last two years. The 1,504 deaths in 2018 represent a drop of more than two percent as compared to the number of fatalities in 2017. Many in the state believe that the hands-free law enacted in 2018 is likely part of the reason for the improvement in traffic safety.

Sadly, in Georgia, as in other parts of the nation, the number of occupant deaths declined, but the number of pedestrian fatalities increased.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that while traffic deaths dropped in the United States, pedestrians and cyclists are dying in greater numbers. In 2018, the number of people killed in the nation while biking increased by over six percent, with a total of 857 fatalities. Pedestrian deaths rose by three percent at the same time to a total of 6,283. Sadly, early numbers from 2019 indicate that fatal pedestrian crashes rose again last year, this time by about five percent.
