The Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Crashes in Florida

March 17, 2020

FLORIDA - The BocaratonTribune.com writes that motorcycle collisions are often severe and deadly due to the fact that motorcyclists have less protection to their bodies.  Motorcyclists are five times more likely to tragically die in a crash when compared to a person in a car.  The risk of injury is ten times higher for motorcyclists than it is for occupants in passenger vehicles.*

One of the most likely causes of a motorcycle collision is speeding.  Speeding leads to about fifty percent of all motorcycle wrecks. Motorcyclists can be vigilant about their own safety by staying aware of their surroundings and slowing down.

Additionally, motorcyclists who weave in and out of lanes, also known as lane splitting, put themselves at risk of injury and death.  This dangerous practice puts the motorcyclist in close proximity to other vehicles and may catch other drivers on the road off guard, leading to a crash.

Alcohol is involved in many of the most severe motorcycle crashes. No one should ever drink and drive.  Technology makes it extremely easy to call a ride-share service at just a click of a button.  Your friends and family want to see you arrive to your destination alive.

Distracted driving is also a growing concern on the road. Cellphones have increased this dangerous behavior.

About one in four fatal motorcycle wrecks are the result of a collision with a fixed object.  Road hazards are a problem to motorcyclists because the hazards present much greater risks to two-wheeled vehicles than to heavier, more stable vehicles.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.
