When it Comes to Speed-Related Crashes, Jacksonville Ranks Low

March 12, 2020

JACKSONVILLE, FL- Jacksonville has fewer speed-related wrecks than many other cities across the nation, according to JACKSONVILLE.COM. A study conducted using data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that out of 111 cities, Jacksonville was in 110th place when it came to speeding-related deadly crashes.*

According to the data, about 10,000 people die in crashes caused by speeding drivers annually. Approximately 30 percent of all vehicle deaths involve a driver who is traveling above the speed limit. Many drivers freely admit that they are prone to speeding. About seven out of ten motorists state that they have violated a speed limit, at least on some occasions.

In North Las Vegas, more than half of all fatal crashes involved speeding, whereas, in Jacksonville, only a little over 6 percent of deadly collisions were the result of speeding motorists. Orlando came in just before Jacksonville while Montgomery came in last.

Nationwide, the number of speed-related fatal collisions has declined by about 34 percent between 2005 and 2017. When it comes to teenage drivers, the drop is even more significant.

Speeding is problematic for many reasons. The NHTSA writes that drivers who speed are more likely to lose control of their cars and cause a crash. These motorists will not have as much time as others to react in an emergency, also increasing their risk of being in a deadly collision. Many safety features car manufacturers include in vehicles will be compromised when collisions take place at higher speeds.
