Sophia’s Law-Making Progress in Florida
TALLAHASSEE, FL- A law proposing to change the flashing lights at pedestrian crossings from yellow to red was introduced in Florida, according to CLICKORLANDO.COM. The law is being referred to as “Sophia’s Law” after a twelve-year-old girl who tragically died in a pedestrian crash last December. The incident took place while the child was crossing at State Road A1A at the intersection with Ellwood Avenue in a marked crosswalk.*
The young girl's parents spoke out in support of the proposed bill. Her father was with her on the day she died. He stated that his daughter pushed the button activating the yellow flashing lights at the crosswalk and waited until there was a clearing to cross. The lights were flashing, and the only car appeared to be far away. Sadly, the driver did not slow or stop for the flashing yellow lights.
According to lawmakers who support the bill, the current lights at crosswalks are not effective. Supporters of the bill argue that the flashing yellow lights at the crosswalks give pedestrians a false sense of security when they cross the street. The bill passed in the House State Affairs Committee unanimously and will go to the House floor for a vote. The child's parents are hopeful that the law will prevent similar tragedies in the future.
