The Reason A Nissan GT-R Cut a Tesla Model X in Half
FLORIDA- A shocking crash in South Florida resulted in a Tesla Model X being cut in half after a Nissan GT-R sped through a red light causing a violent collision, according to THEDRIVE.COM. The rear of the electric car was sheared off just behind the back seat. The back wheels and back of the car ended up dozens of feet away from the front of the vehicle.*
According to experts, the frightening and bizarre results are actually intentional. The breakaway effect is meant to protect people in the cabin in the event of a collision. Many people are familiar with crumple zones, which absorb much of the impact in a crash and help to better protect the people inside the car. The way the Tesla broke in this incident is a similar safety design. The people in the cabin are not thrown into a spiral at an intense high-speed impact. Instead, the rear of the car broke, taking the wheels with it, but the cabin was only subjected to comparatively minor jostling. This design helps to protect people in the passenger cabin. As a result, the occupant of the Tesla only sustained a minor leg injury in the crash.
