Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes Multiple Vehicles in Police Chase through Broward and Miami-Dade

January 25, 2020

MIAMI GARDENS, FL- writes that a hit-and-run driver caused havoc in Broward and Miami counties as he sped through the streets striking numerous vehicles in an attempt to evade his pursuers. Witnesses and the victims were able to point officers in the direction of the suspect, whose Nissan Altima sustained severe damage, and appears to be missing one of its tires.*

The incident began when the driver struck numerous vehicles in the early afternoon in Broward County. The driver then fled the scene, and one of the drivers followed him, caught up with him in Miami-Dade County, and restrained the suspect until the police arrived.

The driver who pursued the fleeing suspect sustained injuries but followed the vehicle for more than half an hour until it was traveling on just rims. He described the Nissan as veering all over the road while the driver attempted to escape. The man later told reporters that the suspect had crashed into a Lyft, which then struck him.

Police placed the man in a vehicle but did not place him under arrest and later released him pending a warrant. Those involved wondered why the driver was released after crashing into several vehicles and fleeing the scene. Officers from Broward County explained that they are bound by rules regarding when an officer can make an out of jurisdiction arrest. The police are filing the appropriate paperwork so that the resulting charges against the driver will be done properly and will not face procedural challenges.

Officers say they will likely charge the suspect for committing a misdemeanor hit-and-run. It is unclear when the police intend to arrest the suspect.
