Fort Lauderdale, Florida Ranked Worst City for Pedestrians in the Country

January 30, 2020

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL- A recent report found that Fort Lauderdale is the worst city in the country when it comes to pedestrian safety, according to CEOWORLD.BIZ. The study looked at the rate of pedestrian fatalities in a total of 200 cities across the United States. Other notable cities that made the top five list after Fort Lauderdale included Detroit, San Bernardino, Phoenix, and Newark.*

Moving further down the list, Florida finds four more of its cities ranking in the top twenty worst cities for pedestrian safety, indicating that one-quarter of the deadliest cities to walk within are in the Sunshine State. Across the United States, the number of pedestrian deaths has been increasing each year. While the total number of pedestrian fatalities for the United States has reached nearly a thirty-year high, the average number of fatalities per 100,000 people was 1.7 nationally.  In Fort Lauderdale, the average was 6.7 per 100,000 people.

Tampa ranks number twelve on the list, with an average of 4.3 fatalities per 100,000 people.  Miami comes in fifteenth with 4.2 deaths per 100,000 people, Orlando in eighteenth with 4 fatalities per 100,000 people, and Jacksonville, with 3.9 death per 100,000 people, ranked nineteenth.

On the other end of the spectrum, the safest place to be a pedestrian was Springfield, Massachusetts, with 0.1 deaths per 100,000 residents. Springfield is followed by Gilbert, Arizona, Lincoln, Nebraska, Plano, Texas, and Naperville, Illinois, rounding out the five best performing cities.

The increasing pedestrian fatality rate comes at a time when the country is also experiencing declines in deaths among vehicle occupants. At the same time, the popularity of larger vehicles is creating an extremely dangerous situation for pedestrians who are involved in accidents with these vehicles.
