DUI Deaths On the Decline in Florida According to NHTSA

January 24, 2020

TAMPA, Fla. — Highway deaths attributable to driving under the influence were down in Florida in 2018, WUSF NEWS reported.  However, no one should be celebrating. Statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that 3,133 people were still tragically killed in car accidents in 2018 in the state of Florida. Of that number, 814 people lost their lives in DUI accidents. By comparison, in 2017, 3,116 people died in crashes in Florida. Among that number, 841 lost their lives in drunk driving collisions. NHTSA reported that drunk driving fatalities dropped 3.6 percent in 2018 nationally and was the lowest it had been since 1982.

However, drunk driving still remains number one killer on the roadway.  Mothers Against Drunk Driving, MADD, estimates 10,500 people tragically die every year in impaired driving crashes.

MADD also noted that fatal DUI crashes are down substantially in states that require first-time DUI offenders to use an ignition interlock device. The ignition interlock device is a breathalyzer, requiring a driver to blow into a mouthpiece to start a vehicle.  MADD says that DUI fatalities are down 16 percent in those states that have passed legislation mandating first-time DUI offenders to use the ignition interlock device. Not every state has passed a law requiring the use of ignition interlock devices among first-time DUI offenders, but the legislation exists in 31 states.

Additionally, NHTSA authorized a grant of $100,000.00 to state governments to finance law enforcement training course to help identify drunk and impaired driving suspects more readily. The grant also helps fund the ignition interlock device program.
