Drunk Driver Tragically Kills One in Pasco County, Florida

January 01, 2020

ZEPHYRHILLS, FL- writes that a woman died in a crash with a work truck that occurred late last week. The collision took place on US 301 when the driver operating the work vehicle veered into the victim’s lane.*

Reports indicate that a 36-year-old man was traveling north in a landscaping truck when he traveled off the side of the highway. The driver then attempted to correct, but lost control of his vehicle and headed into oncoming traffic.

The work truck hit a Honda head-on. The 30-year-old woman operating the Honda tragically died at the scene of the accident.

Police stated that when they arrived at the scene, the driver operating the work truck was “combative.” The man would not take any field sobriety tests, nor would he submit for a blood draw. Police arrested the driver and charged him with DUI Manslaughter and property damage.

DUI manslaughter is a felony crime in Florida and can come with a lengthy prison term along with other criminal and civil penalties as well.

While drunk driving rates have dropped through education and enforcement efforts, drivers who are under the influence of alcohol still kill more than 10,000 people in the United States every year. Every state has a legal limit of .08 blood alcohol content. Many drivers violate this law and are never apprehended. Statistically, police only catch less than one percent of drunk drivers on the roadway. As marijuana legalization increases, and with the ongoing opioid epidemic, alcohol is not the only substance creating risks to everyone on the roadway. When it comes to eliminating impaired driving, there is much work to be done.
