Person in Wheelchair Tragically Dies After Hit by Car on Dale Mabry Hwy in Tampa, Florida

TAMPA, FL. – According to an online news article posted at, a person in a wheelchair tragically died after being hit by a car on Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa, Florida. Florida Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation, and Troopers have not yet indicated whether charges will be pursued in connection with the collision.*

The accident occurred sometime in the morning at the crossing of Dale Mabry Highway with Waters Avenue in Tampa. Florida Highway Patrol and WFLA report that at approximately 7 a.m., a Toyota Prius was traveling toward the intersection and ran into a person who was crossing the roadway in a wheelchair. It is not clear what direction the Toyota had been traveling at the time or in what direction the person was crossing the intersection.

The news report states that the driver of the Toyota had a green light at the time, and the person entered the vehicle’s path. The report did not indicate whether the person was inside of a crosswalk or whether one of the two definitively had the right-of-way at the intersection. It is still not clear what events led to the accident. 

WFLA reports that the person in the wheelchair was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, and he tragically died from his injuries. He was identified as being 66 years old, but no further identifying information about him was immediately released. 

The driver of the Toyota was not identified by officials. It is unclear if this person was injured in the wreck or if anyone else was traveling inside the Toyota at the time of the accident. Florida Highway Patrol is still completing its investigation, and Troopers have not yet released further information. They stated that charges were pending the outcome of the collision investigation.
