Trucker Tragically Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-75 in Columbia County, Florida
COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL. – According to a news report posted online at gainesville.com, a truck driver was tragically killed in a multi-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 75 in Columbia County, Florida. The accident reportedly involved several tractor-trailers and an SUV.*
The accident took place during the afternoon, near mile marker 414 on the northbound side of I-75. Florida Highway Patrol and The Gainesville Sun report that a 2016 Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling north on the interstate, when a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling north in another lane experienced a tire failure. The tire issue caused the 2012 Freightliner to swerve and crash into the 2016 Freightliner.
Both of the tractor-trailers then crashed into the center guardrail, breaking through and entering southbound traffic. The 2016 Freightliner then struck a southbound 2012 Peterbilt tractor-trailer and burst into flames. The Peterbilt veered off the roadway into the shoulder and traveled down an embankment, after which it also caught on fire.
The 2012 Freightliner ended up jackknifing in the southbound lanes. A southbound 2016 Jeep Cherokee approached the crash site and traveled off the roadway to avoid hitting the trucks. The Jeep then crashed into a tree.
The Gainesville Sun reports that the driver of the 2016 Freightliner was tragically killed in the accident. He was identified as a 44-year-old man from North Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The report also says the driver of the Peterbilt, identified as a 45-year-old man from Port Saint Lucie, Florida, was seriously injured and transported to UF Shands Hospital.
The Gainesville Sun further reports the driver of the Jeep, identified as a 47-year-old woman from Pullman, Washington, sustained unknown injuries, and it is not clear if she required transport to a hospital. The driver of the 2012 Freightliner, identified as a 64-year-old man from McDonough, Georgia, was not injured, the report says.
