Two People Tragically Killed in Head-On Crash on U.S. 98 in Lakeland, Florida

LAKELAND, FL. – According to a news report posted online at, two people were tragically killed in a head-on vehicle crash that happened on U.S. Highway 98 in Lakeland, Florida. Investigators are still in the process of reviewing the circumstances of the case, but they have released identifying information on the two victims.*

The accident took place in the early morning, close to the crossing of Highway 471 and U.S. 98. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Fox 13 report that around 4 a.m., a vehicle (make and model not reported) was traveling southbound on the highway and tried to pass slower traffic using the opposite lane. The southbound vehicle then crashed head-on into a northbound vehicle (make and model not reported).

Deputies have not yet said what events led to the crash. It is not clear how long the southbound vehicle was traveling in the northbound lane of the highway or why the southbound vehicle did not move back into the southbound lane before the accident. The cause and circumstances of the accident are still under investigation. 

Fox 13 reports that the driver of the northbound vehicle was tragically killed in the collision. The news report identified her as a 41-year-old woman. Her city of residence was not listed in the report. Fox 13 states that she was the only person in her car at the time of the accident.

In addition, according to Fox 13, the driver of the southbound vehicle tragically died in the crash. He was identified as a 37-year-old man. His city of residence was also not reported. Fox 13 said he was also the sole occupant of his vehicle. 

The crash caused U.S. 98 to close down for about five hours, while crews investigated at the scene. Investigation in the case is ongoing.
