Two Florida Intersections Among Highest in U.S. for Red-Light Running

September 16, 2019

TAMPA, FL. – According to a news report posted online at, two intersections in the Tampa area of Florida have been ranked among the highest in the United States for instances of red-light running. A company recently looked at data around the country and ranked the ten intersections where people run red lights most often.*

The company Verra Mobility, which owns American Traffic Solutions, analyzed data from red light cameras posted at intersections across the U.S. The company used this data to form a list of the Top Ten intersections for red-light running. Among those in the Top Ten were two intersections in Florida, including East Hillsborough Avenue and North 22nd Street in Tampa, Florida, and U.S. Highway 19 and Trouble Creek Road in New Port Richey, Florida.

Reporters with ABC spoke to some residents about the red light report, some of whom said it was not shocking to hear that these intersections made the list. Some residents said they hoped the red-light report would raise some awareness to the issue and encourage drivers to follow traffic laws.

“I’m not surprised by it,” said one resident. “[Highway 19] is a dangerous road, and this is a bad intersection. It’s crazy people don’t realize the value of human life.”

New Port Richey Mayor Rob Marlow agreed with this resident’s assessment of U.S. 19, saying that the highway was “notorious for speeding and drivers running red lights.” A Florida Department of Transportation safety improvement project for U.S. 19 is planned to begin in 2020 that will feature more traffic lights and additional roadway lighting, among other improvements.

Marlow said he would like to see another project approved for U.S. 19 aimed at improving pedestrian safety, which is something he said was also a problem along the highway.
