Suspected Drunk Driver Causes Fatal Accident on Stage Coach Trail in Lecanto, Florida
LECANTO, FL. – According to an online news story reported at fox13news.com, a suspected drunk driver caused a fatal vehicle accident on Stage Coach Trail in Lecanto, Florida. Florida Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation, and Troopers say that the driver ran a stop sign, which led to the crash.*
The accident happened in the late afternoon at the crossing of Lecanto Highway and Stage Coach Trail. Florida Highway Patrol and Fox 13 report that around 4:30 p.m., a vehicle was traveling on Stage Coach Trail, approaching Lecanto Highway, and Troopers say the driver failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection.
It is unclear what direction this vehicle had been traveling at the time, and the news report does not describe the vehicle. After running the stop sign, the vehicle ended up colliding with another vehicle that was traveling north on Lecanto Highway. Following the impact, the first vehicle rolled.
Fox 13 reports that the driver of the second vehicle was seriously injured in the wreck and taken to a nearby hospital, where she tragically died. The report identified her as a 22-year-old woman from Crystal River, Florida.
Fox 13 further reports that the driver of the first car was injured and transported to Bayonet Point Hospital. The report identified him as a 57-year-old man from Inverness, Florida. His injuries are said to be serious. It does not appear that passengers were riding in either of the two vehicles.
At some point during their initial investigation, authorities developed reason to believe that the 57-year-old male driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The report does not say what circumstances caused them to suspect he was intoxicated. Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating, and Troopers say that charges are pending in the case.
