Tanker Truck Overturns, Spills Fuel on Zoo Parkway in Jacksonville, Florida

September 10, 2019

JACKSONVILLE, FL. – According to a news report posted online at, a tanker truck overturned on Zoo Parkway in Jacksonville, Florida, leading to a large fuel leak. The incident caused the roadway to close down for several hours.*

The accident happened in the early morning hours, close to Eastport Road on Zoo Parkway. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and News 4 Jax report that around 5:30 a.m., a tanker truck was traveling on the roadway and somehow ended up turning over onto its side. It is not clear what direction the truck had been traveling or what events led to the truck overturning.

The news report says that the truck was affiliated with Gate Petroleum and was carrying fuel at the time of the collision. After the impact, fuel began to leak from the truck, and responding crews called in a hazmat team to assist with the cleanup. Together with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, the leak was contained. It is unclear how much fuel spilled before that time.

The driver of the tanker truck was not identified in the report, but News 4 Jax says that he or she was not seriously injured in the accident. It does not appear that anyone else was riding in the truck, and no other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Two tow trucks had to come to the scene to lift the truck back onto its wheels and remove it from the site of the collision. Total efforts at the scene had the roadway blocked for close to six hours. Traffic was rerouted onto Eastport Road until about 11:30 a.m., when the scene was finally cleared.

Gate Petroleum reported released a statement following the incident, saying that this type of event was rare for the company, and it was glad that no one was seriously hurt.
