Four-Vehicle Hit-and-Run Crash on University Pkwy in Sarasota, Florida, Causes Fatality

SARASOTA, FL. – According to a news story reported online at, a four-vehicle hit-and-run crash that happened on University Parkway in Sarasota, Florida, caused one fatality. Several other people were injured in the crash, which started with a vehicle running through a red light, according to the news report.* 

The crash took place in the evening at the crossing of University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge Road in Sarasota. Florida Highway Patrol and WWSB report that around 8 p.m., three vehicles were traveling east on University Parkway and were turning left at the intersection with Lockwood Ridge Road. Troopers say a vehicle traveling west on University Parkway then ran a red light at the crossing of the two roads. 

The westbound vehicle struck all three vehicles that were turning, according to the news report. The makes and models of the vehicles were not included in the report. It is not clear why the driver of the westbound vehicle did not stop at the traffic light. Authorities say that after the impact, the driver of the westbound vehicle got out and fled the scene on foot. 

WWSB reports that a passenger in one of the eastbound vehicles was tragically killed in the collision. She was identified as a 70-year-old woman from Sarasota. The driver of this same vehicle and an infant passenger were injured in the crash, according to WWSB. The driver was identified as a 38-year-old woman from Virginia. The infant’s injuries were said to be critical. 

In addition, WWSB reports that another eastbound driver, identified as a 63-year-old man from Sarasota was injured. It is not clear if he went to a hospital. The third eastbound driver was not injured, the report says. 

The driver of the westbound vehicle was located by authorities. He was identified as a 34-year-old man from Sarasota.
