Tractor-Trailer Hits, Kills Pedestrian on U.S. 301 in Hillsborough County, Florida

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. – According to a news article published online at, a tractor-trailer hit and tragically killed a pedestrian on U.S. Highway 301 in Hillsborough County, Florida. The news report indicates that the driver of the truck told officers he was not able to see the victim until right before the crash.*

The accident happened late in the evening, close to the Interstate 4 junction on U.S. 301. Florida Highway Patrol and the Tampa Bay Reporter state that around 11:30 p.m., a pedestrian was walking north in a southbound lane of the highway. The report indicates that she was in the outside lane on the southbound side of the roadway. 

Shortly north of I-4, a southbound tractor-trailer struck the pedestrian. The driver of the tractor-trailer reportedly told authorities responding to the scene that he could not see the pedestrian until it was too late, and though he attempted to swerve, he could not avoid the collision. Authorities were not said to have confirmed the accuracy of this information. 

The Tampa Bay Reporter states that the pedestrian was seriously injured following the crash, and emergency crews took her to Tampa General Hospital, where she tragically died. The report identifies her as a 20-year-old woman from Pinellas Park, Florida. It is not yet clear why she was walking on the highway at the time of the accident. 

The news story does not provide any identifying information about the driver of the truck. It is not clear if he was the sole occupant of the vehicle or if anyone in the tractor-trailer was injured. 

Florida Highway Patrol Troopers are still in the process of completing an investigation into the accident. At the time the report was posted to the Tampa Bay Reporter website, no further information had been released.
