Suspected Drunk Driver Crashes into Sheriff’s Deputy in St. Lucie County, Florida

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL. – According to a news report posted online at, a driver suspected to have been under the influence crashed into a sheriff’s deputy in St. Lucie County, Florida. Both the deputy and the other driver were injured in the accident and taken to local hospitals.*

The accident occurred early in the morning on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Pierce, St. Lucie County, Florida. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office and TC Palm report that around 5 a.m., a deputy with the county sheriff’s office was patrolling flooded areas on this roadway. It is not clear what direction the deputy was driving on Sunrise Boulevard at the time. 

In the 2000 block of the roadway, a Volkswagen of unknown model somehow crashed head-on into the deputy’s marked Humvee. It is unclear how the two vehicles ended up colliding, as the report did not say if the Volkswagen crossed the centerline.

TC Palm reports that the deputy, who was not identified in the news report, was injured in the crash and transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute for treatment. His injuries were said to consist of a hip injury, and he was reportedly released from the hospital the same day. St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said that the deputy’s vehicle protected him from more serious injuries. 

TC Palm further reports that the Volkswagen driver was also injured in the collision and transported to a hospital. He was also not identified in the report. The extent of his injuries and his current medical condition were not known at the time of the report. The driver reportedly admitted to responding deputies at the scene that he had been drinking and taking drugs prior to the crash.

Investigation of the accident is ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time.
