Pedestrian Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident in Jefferson County, Florida

JEFFERSON COUNTY, FL – According to an online news report at, a pedestrian was seriously injured following a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 10 in Jefferson County, Florida.*

The pedestrian is identified as a man, aged 40, from Davenport, Florida.  He sustained critical injuries in the accident.

Per the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred earlier this week in the early morning hours on Interstate 10 west close to mile marker 226.  They note that the operator of a Volvo was going west on Interstate 10 in the outside lane.   The pedestrian was walking on the emergency shoulder of the roadway.  Pursuant to an investigation of the accident, the Volvo struck the man and did not stop.  The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital where his current status is not known at this time.  The driver of the Volvo remains at large. Charges are pending.

There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the local police.

There are several causes of pedestrian accidents, many of which are caused by a negligent driver.  Examples of driver negligence in pedestrian crash cases are as follows:

  • Driver distractions.  Whether someone is eating, talking on a cellphone, texting or drinking, these behaviors are extremely hazardous and lead to serious and times fatal pedestrian crashes.

  • Driving at an excessive rate of speed.  When a driver is speeding, they are less likely to be able to stop in time to avoid an accident.  It is always recommended that drivers follow the speed limit.

  • Failure to obey traffic signs or signals.  Failing to stop at a stop sign or red light can have fatal consequences for pedestrians crossing a roadway.  

  • Failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.  Drivers must stop and allow pedestrians to cross when in a designated crosswalk.  Failing to do so can result in a serious and sometimes fatal accident.
