Three Tragically Killed in Blown Tire Accident on S.R. 50 in Sumter County, Florida

SUMTER COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news story reported at, three people were tragically killed, and two people were injured in a blown tire accident that occurred on State Road 50 in Sumter County, Florida. The tire failure reportedly led to a head-on crash between two vehicles on the roadway.* 

The accident happened late in the morning, close to SE 48th Terrace on State Road 50. Florida Highway Patrol and ABC report that around 10:30 a.m., a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer was headed west on the highway, when the vehicle experienced a tire failure. According to authorities, the front driver’s side tire blew, causing the driver of the Chevy to lose control of the vehicle. 

The Chevy then reportedly crossed over the centerline of the roadway, where it entered the path of an eastbound 1999 Ford SUV. The model of the Ford was not reported. The two vehicles ended up crashing into each other head-on. At this time, it is not clear how the tire on the Chevy failed. The report did not say if the Chevy traveled over a hazard in the roadway or if the tire itself had an issue. 

ABC reports that the driver of the Ford tragically died in the accident. He was identified as a 54-year-old man. His hometown was not included in the report. ABC states that two other people had been riding in the Ford, including a 54-year-old woman and a 72-year-old woman. Both passengers sustained injuries in the crash and were taken to Lakeland Regional, where they are reportedly in serious condition. 

ABC further reports that the driver of the Chevy and one passenger in the Chevy were tragically killed in the crash. The driver was identified as a 54-year-old woman from Webster, Florida. The passenger was identified as a 49-year-old man.
