Multiple Injuries Reported Following Four-Vehicle Crash on I-275 in Tampa, Florida

September 07, 2019

TAMPA, FL. – According to a news report posted online at, injuries to multiple people were reported following a four-vehicle crash that happened on Interstate 275 in Tampa, Florida. The collision appears to have begun with a driver losing control while trying to merge onto the interstate.*

The accident occurred during the early evening on the northbound side of I-275. Florida Highway Patrol and the Tampa Bay Times report that around 5:15 p.m., a vehicle started to merge onto I-275 North from State Road 60. In the process of merging, the driver of the vehicle apparently lost control and ended up veering across all of the lanes on the northbound side of the interstate. The vehicle then crashed into the concrete barrier median.

Following this impact, the vehicle was struck by another northbound vehicle. In addition, large pieces of the concrete median broke away and landed in the southbound lanes of the interstate, where two other vehicles crashed into them. One of these vehicles then caught on fire. No make or model information was reported on any of the four vehicles involved in the accident.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that all four of the drivers involved in the accident were injured. They were not identified in the report, and the report did not say if they were the sole occupants of each of the vehicles. The extent of injuries sustained is not clear, and the report did not say if any or all of the drivers required transport to a hospital for treatment.

The crash caused the entire interstate to close down for several hours, starting by the West Shore interchange. Traffic became heavily backed up during this time, with cars extending out to the Howard Franklin Bridge. Both sides of the interstate reopened shortly after 8 p.m. that day.
