Tragic Pedestrian Crash Kills Two in Hamilton County, Florida (FL)

July 31, 2020

HAMILTON COUNTY, FL- writes that a crash left two pedestrians dead this week in Hamilton County. The incident took place in the late evening on State Road 6 close to County Road 141.*

The involved vehicle was headed eastbound at the time of the collision.

The two victims were in the eastbound lane of traffic when the car struck them. Both of the individuals died at the scene of the crash. One of the victims was a 31-year-old woman, and the other was a 41-year-old man. It is not clear why the pedestrians were on the road at the time of the accident.

Experts indicate that pedestrians face higher risks in Florida than in other parts of the country. In fact, nine out of the country’s twenty deadliest cities for foot traffic are located in the Sunshine State.

The reason that the state has such a poor reputation for dangerous roads is largely thanks to the infrastructure. Florida’s roads are made with speed in mind, not pedestrian safety.

Over the last several years, pedestrian deaths have been increasing across the nation. More than a dozen people are killed in pedestrian crashes each day on average, leading to numbers that are about equal to if a jumbo jet crashed once a month. Many point out that if air travel created such significant risks, something would be done to make the industry safer. No such moves have been made in road traffic.

The differences between various cities are significant. When compared to New York City’s pedestrian danger index (PDI) of 27.1, Miami’s PDI of 313.3 should be setting off serious alarm bells.
