Semi Crash Reported on Lucerne Park Road in Winter Haven, Florida (FL)

July 31, 2020

WINTER HAVEN, FL- writes that a large truck was involved in a crash on Lucerne Park Road. The early morning collision led to slower traffic around Wildflower Drive. Motorists in the area are being asked to avoid the stretch of Lucerne Road that runs from Highway 27 to Winter Haven.*

The authorities have not released details regarding the cause of the crash but stated that the truck overturned.

Rollovers are potentially deadly for truck drivers. These crashes often take place on curves in the road, especially on or off-ramps. Truck drivers may struggle to properly adjust the speed of their vehicles in such situations. The top-heavy nature of large trucks can lead to devastating results when a truck rounds a curve too quickly.

One study indicated that failure to pay attention is one of the reasons that truck drivers may fail to adjust their speed in a timely manner. Other potential causes include falling asleep, or drivers overcorrecting.

Truck drivers may benefit from programs designed to teach truckers to avoid rollovers by using videos and simulations. An effective simulation can allow for the opportunity for drivers to experience a rollover without suffering the consequences.

Trucker fatigue is a real risk to the safety of drivers and to others sharing the road with large trucks. Studies suggest that there is a need for regulators to weigh the economic benefits of allowing truckers to travel for longer intervals with the risks those long shifts create of the drivers being involved in crashes. While drivers are far more likely to be involved in a wreck after eight hours of driving, regulators permit them to be on the road up to eleven hours at a time.
