Tragic Boat Crashes Reported in the Florida Keys

July 26, 2020

KEY WEST, FL- writes that two boat accidents occurred this week in the Florida Keys, leading to two deaths.*

The first incident involved a parasailing accident in Key West. A man and a woman were both injured in that event, and the man later died. The woman was transported to a Miami hospital via airlift. Her current condition is not known.

The other accident took place later on the same day as the parasailing incident. Reports indicate that a 36-foot boat was attempting to navigate near the Long Key Bridge in the dark during rainy weather. The water was rough, and four of the five occupants were thrown from the vessel. One of the passengers died in the accident.

Florida is the worst state for boat accidents. More people are killed in boat incidents in Florida than anywhere else in the country. In 2018, 54 people lost their lives in boat incidents in the Sunshine State. The next highest number of deaths occurred in Texas, where 35 people died, followed by California, with 33 fatalities. Officials believe that at least part of the problem is that many boat operators fail to exercise good judgment. People may take to the water without the proper skill set, fail to pay attention, or operate a boat after consuming alcohol.

Much like driving a car, inattention on a boat can be deadly. Improper lookouts, inattention, speeding, and drunk operators are just as dangerous on the water as they are on the road. Wearing a life jacket can reduce the chances of being killed in a boating incident. Experts recommend everyone wear one as the leading cause of death is falling overboard.
