Pedestrian Crash Reported on Capital Circle in Tallahassee, Florida (FL)

July 26, 2020

TALLAHASSEE, FL- writes that one person suffered severe injuries in a pedestrian collision this week in Tallahassee. The incident took place in the early afternoon on Capital Circle NE close to Goodwill. Reports indicate that the pedestrian is now in the hospital.*

Officers did not release details regarding the cause of the collision, nor did they provide identifying information about the driver or vehicle involved in the crash.

Officials requested that motorists avoid the area.

Pedestrian accidents are common in Florida. The state has more fatal pedestrian incidents than most other parts of the country. Statistics indicate that with the national number of fatal pedestrian crashes on the rise, just five states are responsible for close to half of those deaths. Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Texas, and California together had 47 percent of the nation’s deadly pedestrian collisions.

In recent years, pedestrians have been dying in larger numbers, with annual death tolls for 2018 and 2019, amounting to more than 6,000 each year.

In understanding the reason for the high number of such crashes and deaths, researchers point to several trends. Nighttime crashes are occurring far more often, and rising more quickly, than pedestrian accidents in the daytime. SUVs are two times as likely to cause fatal injuries in a crash with a pedestrian as a sedan would be, and sales of these larger cars on the rise.

Of course, many pedestrian incidents are the result of common driving behaviors that put everyone in danger. Drunk drivers, distracted motorists, and people speeding all contribute to the number of crashes that are taking the lives of vulnerable road users.
