Driver Dies in Tragic Crash with Box Truck on Williston Road in Williston, Florida (FL)

July 19, 2020

WILLISTON, FL- writes that a fatal crash took place this week in Williston, Florida. The victim was in an SUV and attempted to turn left off of Williston Road onto SW County Road 346. A northbound box truck collided with the SUV killing the driver.*

The victim was identified as a 28-year-old woman. Fire crews were on site due to concerns over a possible fuel leak.

Truck crashes kill thousands of individuals every year in the United States. In 2018, these incidents led to 4,136 fatalities. Most of these incidents lead to deadly results for occupants in other vehicles. In fact, about two-thirds of victims are people in smaller cars, and another fifteen percent of victims are cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists. Large truck occupants are only killed in about sixteen percent of these incidents. In collisions that involve large trucks and smaller vehicles, 96 percent of victims are people in passenger vehicles.

A number of factors increase risks involving large trucks, including the weight of these large vehicles, which is often twenty or 30 times as great as that of smaller cars. Not only does this difference in weight put smaller cars at an obvious disadvantage, but the weight also means trucks cannot stop quickly in an emergency. In the event that a truck is not well-maintained or the road is wet, the brakes may not work well, and the vehicle may require even longer stopping distances.

Another issue is that trucks are taller than cars, meaning that cars can slide under trailers in what are called underriding crashes. Such collisions are often fatal.
