Tragic Pedestrian Crash Reported on 216th Street in Suwanee County, Florida (FL)
SUWANEE COUNTY, FL- Wtxl.com writes that a car struck two pedestrians in Suwanee County this week. The incident took place on 216th Street to the east of 51st Drive overnight. The vehicle was identified as a pickup truck, which was traveling eastbound.*
The two pedestrians were also walking eastbound at the time of the crash.
One of the two victims died at the scene of the collision. The authorities stated that the deceased pedestrian was a 28-year-old man. The other victim is a 26-year-old woman who suffered severe, but not life-threatening injuries in the accident. Responders rushed the woman to the Lake City Medical Center for treatment.
Pedestrian crashes are increasing throughout the United States. In Florida, the crisis is worst than in many other parts of the country. Florida is one of five states where nearly half of all deadly pedestrian accidents occur.
Most of these fatal incidents occur after dark, outside of intersections and on local roadways. The massive increase in pedestrian deaths occurring at night is a clear indication that visibility on the road is creating a large amount of risk to vulnerable road users.
Another factor that is causing the number of deadly pedestrian crashes to rise is the popularity of large vehicles such as SUVs. Larger cars are more likely than smaller vehicles to cause fatal injuries when they strike a person. Americans have been purchasing more large vehicles, meaning a greater percentage of pedestrian incidents will result in deaths.
