SUV Strikes and Injures Three-Year-Old on Blanding Boulevard in Clay County, Florida (FL)

July 18, 2020

CLAY COUNTY, FL - writes that a three-year-old suffered severe injuries in a crash that occurred on Blanding Boulevard. The child was reportedly walking alone and trying to cross the roadway in the late evening when an SUV struck him.*

The victim is from Orange Park.

According to police, the impact caused the toddler to be thrown to the sidewalk. A surveillance camera caught the crash, but few details can be made out because it is from a distance. The images do show the SUV slam on its brakes at the intersection.

Just minutes later, emergency responders arrived at the scene.

The driver, identified as a 23-year-old, stopped and called the authorities after the incident. The little boy is currently listed in serious condition. Responders transported him to Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital.

A local business owner stated that the intersection is dangerous, even without a three-year-old attempting to cross on their own. The pizza shop owner went on to express his frustration that the child was alone and wondered who was meant to be watching the boy at the time of the crash.

Police still do not know why the boy was by himself when the crash took place and stated that the investigation is still ongoing. It is not clear whether anyone will face charges in relation to the incident.

Florida has more pedestrian crashes than most parts of the nation. According to statistics, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Texas, and California account for close to half of all deadly pedestrian collisions in the country. Most pedestrians die in crashes that take place after dark. SUVs carry double the risk of fatal injuries as compared to sedans.
