Crash Tragically Kills One on Colonial Drive in Orange County, Florida (FL)

July 15, 2020

ORANGE COUNTY, FL- writes that a crash killed a teen this week in Orlando, Florida. The incident occurred on Colonial Drive in a busy area.*

The authorities shut down all westbound lanes and one eastbound lane while they worked at the scene. No details regarding the cause of the collision were reported, but a power pole at the intersection of Colonial Drive and Hyer Avenue appears to be down. Officers are now searching for a small white sedan that drove away from the scene heading west on Colonial Drive. The incident caused traffic lights in the area to go out. The victim was a seventeen-year-old boy. Investigators are asking that anyone with information, or with surveillance or cellphone video footage of the area to contact police. The victim’s car and the suspect’s vehicle were both reportedly on the road near the Fashion Square Mall in the early morning.

Hit-and-run crashes increased on average, 7.2 percent each year between 2009 and 2016. The AAA carried out a study into these incidents. Profiling drivers who are likely to be involved in hit-and-run crashes is complicated by the fact that so many of these suspects are never apprehended. However, the AAA states that studies suggest that drivers who are young, male, and have histories or driving while drunk or on suspended licenses are more likely to flee the scene of crashes. Drivers who commit hit-and-runs are also more likely than those who remain at the scene of a crash to have been drinking alcohol. Drunk drivers have a clear motivation to run in the hopes of avoiding DUI charges. Of course, fleeing the scene is a crime as well.
