Motorcyclist Dies in Tragic Crash on SW Bascom Norris Drive in Columbia County, Florida (FL)

July 15, 2020

COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL- writes that a motorcyclist was killed in a crash this week in Columbia County, Florida. The wreck occurred in the late morning on SW Bascom Norris Drive and its intersection with Mary Ethel Lane.*

The motorcyclist was traveling straight through the intersection and collided with the right side of a car. Reports state that the driver in the sedan failed to give the motorcyclist the right-of-way.

The victim, identified as a 76-year-old Lake City man, died from his injuries. The authorities have not yet released the identity of the driver.

Motorcyclists face risks that other drivers on the road do not. These motorists are more vulnerable in the event of a crash, but they are also more likely to be overlooked by the drivers who are operating larger vehicles. Because they must rely on other drivers seeing them, motorcyclists should wear brightly colored clothing.

The number one cause of motorcycle crashes is left-turning drivers. Other motorists in larger cars are one of the greatest risks that motorcyclists face. When turning left, people often fail to simply overlook oncoming motorcycles.

As a motorcyclist, it is important to be cautious when approaching an intersection. By looking at cars that are waiting to make a turn, motorcyclists can be prepared to slow down and brake if necessary.

In many cases, slowing down is the best way to reduce the risk of a collision resulting in death. While it may be the driver’s obligation to give the motorcyclist the right of way, the person on the motorcycle is likely to suffer the worst consequences in the event of a crash.
