Driver Flees Crash Scene on Interstate 10 in Santa Rosa County, Florida (FL)

July 15, 2020

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, FL- writes that a crash took place this week on Interstate 10 in Florida. The incident occurred overnight in the westbound lanes and involved three vehicles.*

Reports indicate that a driver in a pickup truck rear-ended a van causing that van to strike a semi-truck. The person driving the pickup truck then exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. The other drivers sustained injuries in the crash. Police are still searching for the motorist who fled the site of the accident.

According to a ranking of states with the most hit-and-run crashes, Florida comes in third place. While more of these crashes occur in the Sunshine State than in most parts of the country, these wrecks are becoming more common throughout the United States.

One reason some suspect that these incidents are on the rise is that the number of crashes overall is increasing, and the number of vulnerable road users killed in collisions is up as well. Pedestrians tend to be the most likely victims of hit-and-runs. In fact, about one in five pedestrian fatalities results in a driver fleeing the scene. With more pedestrian deaths, the number of hit-and-runs may also be expected to climb. The reason pedestrians are more often the victims in these incidents is that drivers sustain minimal vehicular damage as compared to deadly crashes between multiple vehicles. As such, drivers can flee in their cars.

However, the number of deadly hit-and-runs involving car crashes also increased in recent years. Researchers have yet to fully understand the reason that so many people are dying in hit-and-run crashes.
