Tragic Crash Kills Cyclist on US Highway 98 in Destin, Florida (FL)

July 15, 2020

DESTIN, FL- writes that a crash occurred late in the evening this week in Destin that killed a cyclist. The incident occurred on US Highway 98’s westbound traffic lanes and involved two vehicles.*

Reports indicate that a car struck the victim, and the driver then lost control of his car and struck a tree. Another vehicle then also collided with the cyclist. The victim, identified as a 35-year-old man, died before responders arrived at the scene.

The driver in the first vehicle sustained severe injuries in the crash with the tree, and responders transported him to the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center for treatment. A passenger in that car also sustained injuries in the impact.

No information is available regarding the identities of either of the drivers involved in the incident. The crash led to the closure of the westbound lanes of traffic for about six hours.

Police are now requesting that anyone who witnessed the collision contact their office or Crime Stoppers.

Sadly, Florida is potentially the deadliest state when it comes to cycling. In 2017, a total of 783 people died while biking in the United States. Of that total, 125 died in the Sunshine State. The numbers indicate that almost sixteen percent of all people killed while biking out of all 50 states, died in Florida.

The data from 2016 shows a similar trend, with 852 cyclist fatalities, and 138 of which took place in Florida. Clearly, the state is a hazardous place to ride a bike.

Fortunately, child cycling fatalities are on the decline. However, since 1975, the number of people twenty and up who are killed in bike crashes annually has increased dramatically.
