Two Fatal Pedestrian Crashes Reported in Escambia County, Florida (FL)

July 12, 2020

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, FL- writes that two pedestrian crashes occurred this week in a matter of two days in Escambia County. The first incident happened in the very early morning when a car struck and killed a man on Beverley Parkway near the intersection with Palm County. The victim was struck by a car driven by a 27-year old woman from Pensacola. The impact sent the victim into the air, and he was then struck by another vehicle, driven by a 26-year-old man from Louisiana. That incident took place in the very early morning.*

Police have not yet released identifying information about the victim other than to state that the individual was male.

The second incident occurred at Miller Street close to the intersection with Park Street. That crash occurred in the early evening when a 63-year-old woman was attempting to cross the roadway. A 36-year-old man from Pensacola struck the woman causing fatal injuries.

Pedestrian tragedies are common in the Sunshine State. Florida is among five states in which almost half of all deadly pedestrian crashes take place. Nationally, the number of these crashes is also high, and they have been increasing for about the last ten years. Daytime pedestrian collisions are not increasing as rapidly as nighttime pedestrian accidents indicating that visibility plays a major role in these crashes.

Of course, many pedestrian incidents are the result of mistakes or unsafe driving practices. For instance, speeding, drunk driving, and distracted driving all take their toll on road safety for everyone.

A large part of the rise in pedestrian deaths is also the result of more people driving SUVs, which creates a higher chance of fatal injuries in pedestrian incidents.
