One Killed in Tragic Crash on Race Track Road in St. Johns County, Florida (FL)

July 12, 2020

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL- writes that a man was killed in a collision while operating a tractor on Race Track Road in St. John’s County this week. The fatal collision, which occurred in the early afternoon close to Bishop Estates Road, also involved a milk truck.*

A representative of the sheriff’s office stated that the two vehicles were heading westbound when the milk truck collided with the rear of the tractor. The impact caused the tractor to overturn, and the driver was killed.

A witness to the tragic incident stated that an older woman at the scene attempted to perform CPR on the victim, and multiple people were calling emergency services. The witness stated that she is not a regular churchgoer, but witnessing the incident caused her to immediately start praying for the victim.

Following the initial impact, the milk truck continued to travel across the roadway, over the eastbound lanes, and eventually off the road. The truck collided with a tree, knocking that tree over and causing it to fall onto the cab. The tree crushed the truck, but reports indicate that the truck driver was conscious when responders arrived.

The investigation led to drivers being diverted around the scene. The incident happened in front of Fruit Cove Middle School, and traffic was sent to travel slowly around the school to avoid the crash site.

The sheriff’s office stated that the investigation is still early on, but that it is clear that the milk truck rear-ended the trailer. While there could still be some mitigating factors, police stated that rear-end collisions are typically the fault of the rear driver.
