Head-On Collision Kills One, Injures Two on Highway 441 in Columbia County. Florida (FL)

July 12, 2020

COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL - writes that a head-on collision resulted in one fatality this week in Columbia County, Florida. The incident occurred in the late evening on US Highway 441.*

According to state troopers, a Pontiac van was traveling southbound when it veered into the northbound traffic lanes and collided head-on with a Ford SUV.

Responders rushed the driver of the van to the UF Shands Hospital, where he died a short while later. The victim was identified as a 45-year-old man from Lake City.

Two people were in the SUV at the time of the wreck, and both suffered injuries in the collision. Those individuals were identified as a 57-year-old woman from Lake City, who was driving, and a 34-year-old man also from Lake City, who was a passenger. The injured persons were transported to the Lake City Medical Center, where they are receiving treatment for severe injuries.

The severity of head-on impacts can be illustrated by the fact that only two percent of crashes in the United States are head-on, and yet, ten percent of traffic accident fatalities are caused by those incidents. The forces involved in these crashes are severe, and road engineers often attempt to prevent head-on collisions through the use of various methods. In some instances, median barriers are placed to stop cars from drifting into the opposite moving traffic lanes. The barriers may be constructed of concrete of cables. In some cases, cars strike the barriers, which can lead to serious crashes as well. However, when cars are traveling at high speeds, the impact with a barrier is far less damaging than would be a head-on crash.
