Teen Recovering After Being Struck by Car on Stillwell Boulevard in Crestview, Florida
CRESTVIEW. FL- Nwfdailynews.com writes that a car struck and severely injured a fourteen-year-old girl this week in Crestview. The incident took place on Stillwell Boulevard in the late evening, and it is not yet clear whether the girl was attempting to cross the street or walking in the road.*
Video from the site shows the victim with a group of teenagers in the traffic lanes prior to the crash. The driver who struck the girl stated that he or she did not see the teens because it was dark out. Some of the other teens stated that the car brushed past them before striking the girl. Responders rushed the girl to the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center via airlift, but she was later transferred via helicopter to another hospital located near Pensacola. Police have not yet had an opportunity to speak to the girl. Reports indicate that her condition has improved from critical to stable. It is not clear whether charges will be filed in relation to the incident.
Florida has more deadly pedestrian crashes than most of the nation. Just five states, one of which is Florida, account for close to half of all pedestrian deaths in the United States. Unsafe driving behaviors, including drunk driving, speeding, and distracted driving, lead to many of these deaths. As fatal pedestrian crashes rise, other factors also appear to be leading to a high number of incidents. Nighttime accidents have increased far faster than crashes during the day, suggesting the nation has problems with visibility. SUVs are also presenting greater risks to pedestrians than do cars.
