Teen Struck by Car on Stillwell Boulevard in Crestview, Florida (FL)

July 09, 2020

CRESTVIEW, FL- writes that a teenage pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Stillwell Avenue this week in the late evening.*

According to police, a security camera showed the victim among a group of teens who were walking on Stillwell Boulevard. The vehicle is also seen on the camera and appears to have its headlights on. The driver reported that he or she was unable to see the teens in the roadway until the crash took place. The victim was identified as a fourteen-year-old girl. Responders transported the girl to the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center via airlift. The girl was then flown to a hospital near Pensacola. The teen is currently in critical condition.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that early estimates of traffic fatalities in 2019 show that deaths dropped last year. The numbers indicate that the decline in fatal crashes is part of an ongoing trend. The number of people killed was lower in 2017 and again in 2018, and if 2019’s numbers prove accurate, then the United States will have seen three straight years of reduced traffic deaths.

In 2018 however, pedestrian deaths rose by three percent, even as overall crash fatalities were dropping. Fortunately, in 2019, pedestrian fatalities appear to have declined by two percent. Driver deaths also dropped by three percent, and passenger fatalities were down by four percent. Motorcycle fatalities dropped by one percent, and cyclist deaths were down three percent.

Only deadly crashes involving large trucks appear to have increased in 2019. Early numbers indicate that more people were killed in those incidents. Large truck crash victims went up by one percent.
