Wrong-Way Wreck Kills Two on Gratigny Parkway Near Miami, Florida (FL)

July 09, 2020

MIAMI, FL- writes that a crash left two people dead this week in Florida. According to reports, the incident took place in the very early morning on Gratigny Parkway, which is also State Road 924.*

A woman was operating a Subaru sedan and heading eastbound in the westbound traffic lanes. The Subaru ended up striking a Toyota head-on. The impact killed the driver and a passenger who were in the Toyota. Another passenger in the Toyota was seriously injured and was transported via airlift to the Jackson Memorial Hospital. That individual is now in critical condition. The driver in the Subaru was also in critical condition and was transported to the same hospital via airlift as well. The wreck led to the closure of the road for about five hours while officers carried out an investigation.

Wrong-way crashes are collisions caused by drivers who are traveling against the flow of traffic on a high-speed divided highway. One study found that these types of crashes are about 27 times as likely to be fatal, as are other types of collisions.

In a comparison of alcohol impairment among wrong-way and right-way drivers who were involved in deadly crashes, data indicates that wrong-way drivers are often under the influence of alcohol. The report found that out of 1,566 wrong-way drivers involved in crashes, 936 were drunk. Out of the 1,934 right-way drivers, only 126 turned out to be under the influence. The number of right-way drivers exceeded the number of wrong-way drivers in that study because the wrong-way drivers often were involved in an impact with more than one right-way driver.
