One Killed in Tragic Crash on Interstate 95 in St. John’s County, Florida (FL)

July 09, 2020

ST. JOHN’S, FL- writes that a man died in a tragic crash on Interstate 95 this week in Florida. The incident occurred in the very early morning close to State Road 206.*

The victim reportedly collided with the rear of a semi-truck. The reason that the driver did not slow down is unclear at this time. The incident led to the closure of the interstate’s northbound lanes for several hours. Traffic on the interstate was backed up while workers investigated and cleared the scene. The victim was identified as a 26-year-old man from Tallahassee.

Trucks present a variety of risks to other motorists on the road. The size of semi-trucks is only part of the problem. With the height of a trailer, people in smaller cars risk underriding the truck in a crash. When these instances occur, the safety features on the passenger car are not able to provide the intended protection to the occupants in the vehicle. Instead, the impact occurs where the occupants are seated. When this happens, the results are frequently fatal.

Underride crashes kill hundreds of people in the United States every year. Part of the tragedy of these instances is that they are preventable. Guards can be installed on trucks that prevent vehicles from traveling beneath trucks. This solution could drastically reduce the dangers of crashes with trucks. While rear guards are mandatory, side guards are not, and the rear guards used by many trucking companies are not capable of preventing crashes. Safety advocates have been fighting to make rear guards stronger and to require side guards to reduce the number of people killed in these tragic incidents.
