Tragic Crash Kills Driver on County Road 108 in Nassau County, Florida (FL)

July 09, 2020

NASSAU COUNTY, FL- writes that a driver died in a tragic crash that occurred this week in Nassau County. The incident took place in the later evening on County Road 108.*

Reports indicate that the victim was traveling eastbound when she drifted into the westbound traffic lanes. The woman’s vehicle collided head-on with another car. The victim, who died at the scene, was identified as a 25-year-old woman. Two people were in the other vehicle, including a 29-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man. Both of the people in the westbound car were severely injured in the wreck.

Head-on collisions are some of the most severe crashes that take place on the road. About one out of every ten people who die in a car accident are killed in head-on impacts. These crashes involve intense forces that lead to serious consequences for vehicle occupants.

Road designers can try to limit the risk of such crashes by installing median barriers to prevent cars from drifting into the opposite traveling lanes of traffic. The risk of a driver veering into oncoming vehicles is greatly reduced when a cable or concrete barrier is installed.

Barriers themselves can present a risk to people on the roadway, and drivers sometimes do strike barriers leading to crashes. However, when cars are traveling at high speeds, the results of a vehicle striking a barrier are typically less devastating than the results of a head-on crash. In some cases, even barriers do not work to stop drivers from getting into head-on collisions. Wrong-way crashes take place when a driver enters a divided road traveling in the wrong direction.
