Tragic Alafia River Crash Kills One in Riverview, Florida (FL)
RIVERVIEW, FL- Baynews9.com writes that a crash on the Alafia River left one person dead and injured another this week in Riverview. The incident took place in the evening when a personal watercraft struck an innertube that was carrying two people.*
There were at least two people on the inner tube when it was struck, and both of those individuals were ejected in the crash. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene with a dive team. One of the individuals had suffered injuries, and the other person had died.
The investigation is still underway, but the cause of the crash is not yet clear. No names have been released at this time.
As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, the crash is a tragic reminder of the dangers posed by boating and water sports. The FWC stated that it is important for anyone out on the water to remember how quickly something can go wrong.
The US Coast Guard states that in 2017, 658 people were killed in boating accidents. One of the most important ways to prevent these tragedies is to use a life jacket whenever on the water. Drowning is the leading cause of death in boating accidents, causing 76 percent of these fatalities. In those instances, 84 percent of the victims were not using a life jacket.
Even good swimmers must wear life jackets. A boating incident can leave people too injured or disoriented to swim to safety. A life jacket will make rescuing the victims easier for responders. Children should always wear a life jacket whenever boating. It is important to select a life jacket that fits properly and ensure that everyone on the boat is using the jacket properly.
