One Killed in Tragic Motorcycle Crash in Jacksonville, Florida (FL)

May 20, 2020

JACKSONVILLE, FL- writes that a woman was killed in a motorcycle crash this week in Jacksonville. The victim was a passenger riding on the back of the motorcycle at the time of the wreck.*

The motorcycle was traveling eastbound on 103rd Street when a westbound Honda Civic tried to make a left turn onto Ricker Road. The sedan cut into the path of the motorcycle, and the bike struck the passenger side of the car. Both the driver and the passenger on the motorcycle were thrown in the impact.

Emergency responders rushed the victim to the Orange Park Medical Center, where she died a short while later from her injuries. The man operating the motorcycle was severely injured, and reportedly in critical condition following the accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol did not release the names of the victims. The driver from the Honda was identified as an eighteen-year-old woman from Jacksonville. She was not injured in the crash.

Motorcycle deaths dropped by about five percent between 2017 and 2018. Still, the total number of people killed in these wrecks was 4,985. While fewer motorcyclists died, they are overrepresented when it comes to overall traffic-related deaths.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that all motorcyclists use helmets that are approved by the Department of Transportation, take steps to make themselves more visible to other drivers on the road, and never drink and ride. One of the main risks motorcyclists face is being overlooked by other drivers on the road. It is the responsibility of all motorists to look out for smaller vehicles and to share the roadway.
