Teen Dies in Tragic Motorcycle Crash in Lehigh Acres, Florida (FL)
LEHIGH ACRES, FL- Nbc-2.com writes that a motorcyclist died in a crash this week in Lehigh Acres that occurred at the intersection of Arthur Avenue and Connecticut Road in the evening. The young motorcyclist was heading westbound on Arthur Avenue and approaching the intersection. A 25-year-old driver was in an SUV and tried to turn left from the eastbound lanes of Arthur onto Connecticut Avenue. The car cut into the path of the victim, causing the two vehicles to collide.*
When it comes to motorcycle crashes, left turns are one of the most dangerous scenarios. Drivers frequently fail to see motorcyclists as they are approaching an intersection and therefore attempt to make their turn even though they cut into the path of the smaller vehicle. When this happens, it is, of course, the motorcyclist who will most often suffer the consequences of that driver’s actions.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that motorcycle crash deaths are declining, and yet, these motorists are still accounting for a disproportionately high number of overall traffic fatalities around the nation. The risk of being killed in a traffic crash is about 28 times as high for motorcyclists as it is for people in other vehicles. In 2018, 4,985 people lost their lives in motorcycle collisions, indicating a drop of five percent as compared to 2017.
In order to reduce the risks of riding a motorcycle, riders should always use a helmet. Another important way to increase safety is to use bright-colored clothing or reflective gear. Taking steps to become more visible may reduce the chances of being overlooked by a motorist in a bigger vehicle.
