Tragic Crash on Conners Highway Kills One, Injures Others in Marion County, Florida (FL)

May 20, 2020

MARTIN COUNTY, FL- writes that a four-vehicle wreck occurred in Martin County this week. The incident took place in the northbound lanes of Conners Highway in the early morning.*

One person was reportedly killed in the crash, and several others were injured. The road was closed down for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene. The crash was the second deadly morning collision on the road in two days. The day before this wreck, a 27-year-old man died in a crash when his truck rear-ended a garbage truck, causing both of the vehicles to overturn.

According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there have been 112,251 crashes reported in the Sunshine State this year. Of those collisions, 975 resulted in fatalities with a total of 1,043 deaths on the state’s roads so far this year.

In total, 400,555 crashes took place in Florida in 2019, leading to 2,971 deadly wrecks and 3,215 fatalities.

Overall, car crash-related fatalities have been dropping around the country every year. In 2018, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that the total number of deadly collisions in the country dropped by 2.4 percent. This news, although a positive sign because deaths are dropping, still highlights the large number of lives lost in car crashes in the United States every year. Drunk driving death rates declined, as did child fatalities, speed-related deadly collisions, and motorcycle fatalities. While progress was shown in these areas, some categories of collisions, such as those involving large trucks, still went up that year.

Early estimates for 2019 suggest that the number of people killed in car crashes dropped again last year.
