Tragic Traffic Accident Kills One in Volusia County, Florida

May 17, 2020

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL- writes that one person died in a collision in Volusia County this week in the late morning. The incident occurred at the intersection of Williamsburg Road and North Woodland Boulevard. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, there were two vehicles involved in the wreck.*

One of the cars was a sedan that was heading east on Williamsburg Road. The other vehicle was described as an SUV that was northbound on North Woodland Boulevard. The sedan turned left at North Woodland Boulevard, and the SUV collided with the rear of the smaller vehicle.

The driver in the SUV was identified as a 28-year-old man. A 56-year-old man was operating the sedan and was killed at the scene of the crash. The 28-year-old suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

No additional information was released regarding the crash.

Some safety experts have argued that turning left is dangerous and should be avoided altogether. When compared with crashes caused by cars turning right, left turns are about ten times as likely to cause a collision. The danger of a fatal accident is greater with left turns as well, and they lead to about 36 percent of all deadly motorcycle crashes. Limiting the ability of drivers to turn left would save lives, and yet many people believe that convenience is more important. However, studies indicate that left turns might not even make driving more efficient. Drivers may, on average, arrive more quickly at their destination by not making left turns, or at least, by making very few lefts. This is what UPS has instructed its drivers to do in an effort to make delivery routes more efficient, not just safer.
