Tragic Traffic Accident Kills One in Manatee County, Florida (FL)

May 17, 2020

MANATEE COUNTY, FL- writes that an SUV and a truck were involved in a tragic collision that left one person dead. The incident took place in Palmetto on 36th Avenue East. Reports indicate that the SUV was traveling southbound in the mid-afternoon and tried to turn around at the intersection of 21st Street Court East.*

A truck was behind the SUV and collided with the smaller vehicle as it attempted the U-turn. The driver of the truck stated that he tried to avoid the crash but was unable to do so. Both of the vehicles veered off the roadway and crashed into a ditch. The truck rolled over and ended up partially on the SUV.

The man in the SUV was identified as a 67-year-old from Sarasota. Police reports indicate that he was wearing a seatbelt at the time.

The truck driver, identified as a 37-year-old Bradenton man, and a passenger identified as a 24-year-old man also from Bradenton, were both severely injured in the collision.

The fatal crash is still being investigated.

U-turns are typically legal, although, in many places, there are signs stating that U-turns are not allowed. Even if it is legal at a given location to make a U-turn, the driver must ensure that they can complete that turn safely without causing traffic interference. In many locations, heavy traffic will prevent drivers from carrying out U-turns without putting themselves and others at risk. Drivers also often underestimate the amount of space needed to complete a U-turn and end up having to make a five-point turn. The result is that the turn will require far more time to complete and be more likely to create problems with the flow of traffic.
