Tractor Crash Tragically Kills One in Graceville, Florida

May 17, 2020

GRACEVILLE, FL- writes that the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene of a tractor accident in Graceville this week. The incident occurred on Smokey Road in the late morning. The victim had fallen off of a tractor and died on the scene.*

Reports identified the victim as a 20-year-old man. Police stated that the man was standing on the moving tractor and lost his footing, falling to his death.

Tractors are the cause of many serious accidents that occur on farms across the United States. In fact, the problem of rolling tractors is the number one cause of death on American farms. Ten percent of farmers will roll their tractors in their lifetime and one in seven who do so sustained permanent disabilities from these accidents. When farmers die in tractor crashes, the farms have a seventy-percent chance of going out of business within the next five years.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agriculture is one of the most dangerous industries in which to work. Accidents on farms across the nation killed 416 workers in 2017. The industry’s rate of fatalities is 20.4 for every 100,000 workers. Because farmers often live and work at their farms, their family members are often at risk of injuries or death as well.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was established in 1990 to address the high number of injuries and fatal accidents on farms. The institute looks at the risks posed to those working in agriculture, including traumatic injuries, exposure to toxic pesticides, and other physical dangers created by working on a farm.
