Sarasota Crash Severely Injures Two on Interstate 75

May 18, 2020

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL- writes that a crash took place this week in Sarasota County that left two individuals with serious injuries. The incident happened on Interstate 75 in the morning. A 21-year-old man was traveling southbound on the interstate at what troopers called "a high rate of speed."*

As the motorist was approaching the Toledo Blade exit, his vehicle collided with the rear of another car. The car that was rear-ended was being driven by a 36-year-old woman from Naples. The front vehicle was pushed off the roadway in the impact and collided with several shrubs before striking a pine tree and rolling onto its left side.

The man's car also left the roadway and traveled onto across the grass on the shoulder of the road before stopping in the woods.

Police stated that they would be issuing a citation for the man for careless driving and causing a rear-end collision.

Many rear-end crashes could be prevented by technology that is already being used in many vehicles. Automatic emergency braking systems are able to alert drivers when they are approaching something too fast. If the driver fails to take action, some systems are capable of preventing the crash by braking automatically. These systems are likely going to prevent many crashes from occurring, and also reduce the severity of some rear-end crashes by slowing the speed of the vehicle prior to impact. Similar systems may also help to prevent vehicles from striking pedestrians and, therefore, further lower the number of traffic deaths that occur every year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) believes that driver assistance technology will soon be able to save thousands of lives every year.
