Cyclist Severely Injured in Bay County Crash

May 17, 2020

Bay County, FL- writes that a crash occurred in Bay County that left one person with critical injuries. The evening wreck happened when a cyclist was attempting to cross SR77.*

The driver was identified as a 39-year-old woman from Panama City. According to police reports, the woman stated that she tried to swerve, but failed to avoid striking the cyclist.

The injured cyclist is a 54-year-old man whose condition was declared critical after the crash. Responders airlifted the man to the Bay Medical Center for treatment.

Cyclists and pedestrians are continuing to die in high numbers around the country, even as other forms of traffic deaths are continuing to drop. When it comes to crashes caused by speeding drivers, drunk drivers, and motorcycle wrecks, deaths are dropping. Children are also less likely to be killed in car crashes.

Much of the progress has come in the form of improved technology in vehicles that is able to better protect occupants inside of cars and SUVs. However, according to the AAA, these systems are not currently as effective at preventing cars from injuring or killing pedestrians or cyclists.

In fact, while most pedestrians are killed at night, pedestrian detection technology performs poorly after dark. With 76 percent of pedestrian deaths, and 50 percent of cyclist deaths occurring when it is dark out, a technology capable of preventing cars from killing vulnerable road users will only prove effective if it can prevent these crashes as well.  Another way to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists would be to lower the speed limit as this reduces the chances of a crash resulting in a fatality.
